GILES PRICE WINS 2ND PRIZE AT TAYLOR WESSING PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT @ NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY & ANNOUNCES KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN
Plan B Arts is proud to announce that British photographer Giles Price has been awarded second prize at this year’s Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize. This prestigious international award is firmly established as the leading showcase for new talent in portrait photography and is accompanied by a major exhibition, which runs until February 9th at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Price’s striking image ‘Kumbh Pilgrim: Mamta Dubey and Infant Child’ (2013), was selected from over 5400 submissions. The portrait is part of a wider project entitled ‘21st Century Kumbh’ a unique document of the ancient Indian ‘Kumbh Mela’ pilgrimage and festival, which sees hundreds of millions of people travel from all over the globe to the confluence of the sacred Yamuna, Ganga and (mythical) Saraswati rivers. To coincide with the award announcement and the Taylor Wessing Photographic Prize exhibition, Price is launching a Kickstarter campaign, to publish ‘21st Century Kumbh’ as a high-end limited edition art book. Rewards for contributions to the campaign range from prints of the Taylor Wessing award-winning image to copies of the book and one-on-one workshops, to a helicopter ride above London with a specialist aerial master-class with the photographer.
The London-based photographer’s interest in photography began aged 16, when he joined the Royal Marine Commandos, with whom he served in northern Iraq and Kurdistan at the end of the first Gulf War in 1991. After leaving the military due to injuries sustained in Iraq he went on to study photography and to explore landscapes and communities around the world, inspired by his time in service. He has exhibited widely and his work can be seen in magazines and broadsheets internationally and his work is held n the collections of the National Portrait Galleyr and Imperial War Museum, London.
The ‘21st Century Kumbh’ Kickstarter campaign runs from November 19h – December 19th 2013 at:
